  • Secondly, it is comforting to know that if I’m not communicating well on line with the webmaster or I need one-on-one tutoring, I can drive to an office and speak to someone. At least it’s an option.

In my last post I mentioned 2 skills that I look for in a webmaster: the ability to design graphics and some basic programming skills even working with a Word Press theme for my website.

I also want my webmaster or virtual assistant to know about search engine optimization, SEO. They should have an understanding of how search engins work so they can properly code your website. When you examine websites in their portfolio, look at the title bar in the browser. If this title is the same on every page of the site, the developer is not taking search engines into account. Also check to see if you can find the websites in their portfolio on Google and how many pages are indexed. If you expect your website to be found on the first page of search results for certain keywords, make sure you webmaster has experience in search engine optimization.

Before you inquire about how much a webmaster will charge for your website I want to make a few points. Many webmasters have packages with different set prices starting at the basics costing the least to putting up a site with all the bells and whistles which will cost the most.  Make sure you know exactly what is covered in each package. Does it cover what you need? What is the process for approval? Is there a specific number of revisions included? How will you be billed? What’s the time frame? Ask lots of questions?

If you have a specific budget for the website ask the webmaster or virtual assistant what they can do for that price.
There are also web designers who offer estimates rather than packages. Every website is different, and your business is different from the next. To make sure the estimate is as accurate as possible, write out as many details about your website as you can. Your website is your marketing tool. You need to do your homework for the website to help you market your business.  It’s worth the effort.

Have you ever had a bad experience with a web designer? Tell us your shorten version and type it in the comment box along with what you recommend to avoid this problem.

To your successes,
