There’s a little more information you should know about keywords and writing for SEO. Actually, there’s a lot more but you’ll probably pick up on much of what you need to know based on your experience with SEO marketing. Every topic and every client is different and may require different approaches. It may be that the WP theme you use for one client requires a different approach to SEO configuration than the one you use for another client. There are variations.
Keywords in Title Tags
I wrote this in my last post but it’s worth repeating: use your keyword phrases in your title. First it makes sense to do that because your key word phrases probably describe the topic. There are SEO Gurus who declare you should only use your keyword phrases in your title and repeat them if you need. For ex: Weight Loss, Losing Weight, Losing Weight Fast.
When the search engines read your blog or website so they can index it, it reads the code directly not the way the website is laid out and not the great looking banners. Word Press blog platform is built so that the headline or the title of your blog post is the first thing the search engines see. The search engines figure out that the words that show up first on your site are the most important ones.
It makes sense then that the title is important. When I’m search for information the search engines usually bring me to a title which used the keywords I used for my search. The important thing you need to remember, however, is that the title can’t be gibberish and not make sense. That’s something that will turn me off and besides, the search engines don’t like it either. My advice is to use a primary key phrase in your title and if it makes sense you can use a second keyword phrase in the title.
Meta Tag Keywords
All of my Word Press blogs let me apply tags to my posts. These tags help me organize the blog for readers as well as for search engines using the meta tags. These are words and phrases that describe the content of your post. Some consultants advise not repeating the same keywords more than 2 or 3 times in a meta tag. Others disagree. Talk to your website developer and work out a plan for your business.
The search engines recognize your tags and use them to prioritize your site especially when ranking your site. The search engines recognize the tags and link them to other pages on your blog or website.
My advice is not to overdo the use of the tags because then the search engines thing you are trying to associate your content with unrelated topics and they don’t approve of that. A good rule of thumb is to posit 5 to 10 appropriate tags.
I don’t think meta tags are as important as they once were because the search engines are looking for keywords. That’s another reason why the first 250 words of your posit or article have to be keyword
- Tip: Use common misspellings or missed keys when you type some of your keywords in the meta tags.
- Tip: Use singular and plural versions of the same phrase.
- Tip: Use all lower case and Upper and lower case
- Tip: use Google Insights, a web-based tool that compares the popularity of any search term you want to know.
Meta Tag Description
Again Word Press themes have a place for you to write a one sentence description about your latest post. This is another section for you to use key word phrases. Repeat your most important keyword phrases because there isn’t that much room to use all of them. The description should be about 25 words, tops. This is the description that’s used to encourage readers visiting your site to click and enter it. It’s the keyword phrases that should attract perspective clients.
That just about takes care of the basics of writing for SEO. Keep in mind through all this information that the content you provide must be relevant to your blog and with your key words.
There really is no magic formula for SEO writing. I’m convinced it’s part common sense, part problem solving and partly writing well with organized content.
Organized content is a must because readers are usually looking to answers for a specific question. Organizing your content with headlines and subheads helps the reader and the search engines find you and read what you have to say.
My other piece of advice is to stay away from spinning articles particularly if you’re in the business of freelance writing. Entrepreneurs are looking for people who have SEO writing skills; they are not looking for someone who is taking a short cut.
Content is king when you’re writing for SEO or for anything else. It works for search engine optimization and for website conversion enhancement because search engines can read only text. It makes sense, then to new, relevant content in your writing all the time.
This and my previous two posts should give you a good understanding of writing content for SEO. Much success with your efforts.
